The landscape is constantly changing, surfaces are broken, enormous amounts of gravel are driven away, and new terrains emerge. There are several large gravel pits in the Sorø area, for example in the districts of Frederiksberg and Pedersborg. The local artist Regitze Engelsborg Karlsen, if anyone, has her feet firmly planted in these gravel pits, and in the tensions that are at stake here. She is concerned with our relationship with the raw materials in the landscape around us; of how landscapes are constantly changing; of our perception of the landscape and our idea of nature when we exhaust resources from the underground. In the museum's courtyard, Engelsborg has installed the sculpture group “Inhale time, exhale dust”. &nbsp;The sculptures are scattered in smaller piles of gravel, scattered as if after an explosion or an attack - as if the landscape had been broken out of its shape. The sculptures, which could resemble torn and destroyed body parts or bodies in change, are made of concrete, stone, sand, roots and gravel, which are also the raw materials that are extracted in gravel pits. Here the dichotomous division of nature and culture is only possible as a thought and not in reality. Culture, which can be regarded as the human intermediate calculations between the "I" and the circumstances of life, is in this way of thinking inextricably linked to the fact that - after all - we are nature. Contrary to the Western understanding of nature, where nature, apart from humans, is an 'other', we are inextricably linked to our surroundings and the landscapes that shape our world. We are drawn towards them, towards nature's shabby creature; and we constantly try to understand it and comprehend it, even though it can turn our lives upside down in a split second. Weathering is a duo exhibition showing newly produced and site-specific art works by Regitze Engelsborg Karlsen and Albin Werle. The exhibition is created on the basis of a series of studies of local stories, myths, landscapes, and experiences that the two artists have made during individual research stays in Skagen in the winter of 2022. Weathering works actively with the human narratives and offers its take on different translations of something outside of humans; a nature and a volatility that is difficult to grasp and hold on to. Throughout time humans have created narratives about their lives on earth through monstrous tales, otherworldly myths, and ambiguous symbolism; as explanations for brutal incidents and for the forces of nature that have challenged and eliminated human life at all times. Our language forms the basis of these narratives as a way of creating meaning. In Weathering, the way in which we have tried to understand ‘the uncontrollable’ through various narratives is made clear. We attribute agency and intention to nature for its actions, and we understand nature as a personification of greater forces that, for example, wish to punish us for our actions. Among other things, this way of thinking about the world forms the basis of many of religions, which have been a way of maintaining cultures, social hierarchies, and moral codes driven by a need to understand the intention behind brutal natural disasters, epidemics, and the unpredictable nature, which is not immediately explainable. "The big narrative" is created by mythologies, supernatural revelations, and realistic stories, which give the illusion of life experience and which help to create overall lines for how we should understand the world, and what our role is in it. Through tales of heroes, heroines, anti-heroes, and martyrs, morals and doctrines are shaped so that we don't all have to break the moral codes. At the same time, these stories offer explanations for everything that cannot be explained. Thor brings thunder and lightning fire, and Rán drags sailors down into her realm of the dead beneath the surface of the sea. Nature is brutal. Yet we try to humanize it by viewing it as mad gods, or the moralizing force that punishes us for our sins and vices because we do not act in the best interest of the community. Its brutal nature forces us to look back at the crises of the past, just as religions do. What did we do wrong, what could have been done differently, and what can we actually learn from it? The time we live in, where the digital presence has become an extension of our reality, constantly offers us new ways of experiencing the world, challenges our beliefs, and provides unlimited access to knowledge that we ourselves are responsible for sorting through. The overall narrative, which in previous times has been controlled by various rulers, is now up to the individual to create. We have never been more focused on ourselves, we have never been more disconnected from the nature that surrounds us, and we have never been more aware of our own decay. We have and are about to shift the balance of nature to such an extent that we are practically on the way to the extinction of our own existence. We have developed advanced technologies to deal with crises, even natural disasters, but in the end it is only a form of life-prolonging medicine, not a real solution. "The big narrative" is broken up into fragmented interpretations of our role on planet earth, but one way to gain a new understanding of our surroundings could be to approach them with curiosity - to understand ourselves and the surroundings as something that is inextricably linked, not in opposition to each other. mountain that has collected bodies, a body that is in transformation into a mountain. Creatures in transition, something that is in transformation. In this work, Regitze works sculpturally with questions about which landscapes we absorb and are a part of, both locally and globally. Last summer she visited Kristiansand and explored the city - as a visiting Dane, interested in the city beach and the holiday town atmosphere. She bought towels from local thrift stores and collected sand and gravel from city sites. Regitze has mixed the towels and sand materials from Kristiansand with similar materials from his home in Sorø. Together they make up a sculpture group consisting of 10 sculptures; the towels are dipped in concrete, glue and other binders so that they become hard as shells and then stones, sand and gravel are poured over them. The towels emphasize the intimate connection between the landscape and the body, which is at play when we use the beach either as a tourist or a local. In this way, the work focuses on our relationship with the landscape around us and how our identity is always also linked to the landscape. How the extraction of raw materials, our consumption and our movement in the world are constantly reshaping the landscape around us. The work is a sculptural study of how we – both materially and emotionally – absorb our surroundings and how we can create a new relationship with our landscape. When and where are we so closely connected to the landscape and nature that we want to take care of it? How do the close ties to our surroundings arise, which also give us a sense of responsibility? Raw materials such as sand and gravel are central to Karlsen's sculptural works, which were most recently presented in the exhibition Koloristerne at The Free Exhibition Building, Copenhagen (2023) and which has previously been exhibited at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Roskilde (2021) and Vejle Art Museum (2020). Regitze has an investigative approach to his materials and their extraction and starts from subjects and problems such as the body, politics, ecology, feminism and materiality. series of sculptures, 4 creature like bodies, rising form europe pallets. The outer layer of the sculpture is all about the texture: colourful moving blankets mixed together with layers of concrete, sand, gravel and stones. The colourful small plastic pieces in the moving blankets are as visible as the small stones, the mountain crumble. All is mixed together. Like bodies absorbing their surroundings, growing together. My works want to bring imagination and fantasy in to the unknown future which we are on the threshold of. Trying to understand the connection between our bodies and the surroundings landscape we are in. In transformation. In transit. DIG WHERE YOU STAND is art installation that brings the active gravel pit back to Hedeland Nature Park. The work focuses on the materials that have been removed from the area and how this movement of materials has created the landscape. Visual artist Regitze Engelsborg Karlsen has reintroduced the materials from the gravel pit by putting their imprint on the tent cloth and by recording 24 hours from a local active gravel pit. Step into the room and listen to an active gravel pit, which changes character depending on the time of day you listen with. Come while the machines are running, or listen to all the sounds that emerge when the working day is over and the gravel pit is left to itself. The participating artists, who are all connected to the immediate area around Sorø, exhibit sculptural works that, in their own way, enter into dialogue with the gravel pit's changed landscape. Stone, soil and gravel form part of the raw material of the works, and the exhibition thereby unfolds completely new connections and connections between art, material and nature.
